The Cox corporate security team strives to provide a safe and secure environment for Cox employees and its operating companies. Personal security is a shared responsibility. Increase your awareness of suspicious persons and situations. Do not assume that everyone is a member of the community or providing a service to the company – trust your instincts! If something does not seem right then it probably isn't.

Take notice of persons pilfering in the area and make appropriate calls to security officers when necessary. If you see someone wandering you are encouraged to ask simple questions to help them such as:

  • May I help you?
  • Who are you here to see?
  • Is he/she expecting to meet with you today?

If the person has legitimate business in the building, he or she will appreciate your assistance. Be sure to make contact with the intended party before you or someone else escorts the guest to the person’s office; if necessary, use the house phone to call. If you witness suspicious persons or situations, immediately contact your local security officers to file a report and be prepared to describe the person and situation when you call.

Please do your part to help maintain your office as a secure place to work by following good workplace security practices and by working with others to improve security.

Workplace security involves:

  • Discouraging theft by following appropriate procedures.
  • Secure valuables and company property.
  • Handling inappropriate telephone and communications.
  • Protecting yourself when you work before and after regular hours.
  • Following security procedures for parking you car, especially when you come to work early or stay late.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and the environment so that you are not manipulated by people who want to trick you into performing actions which allow them to gain access to our properties.
  • Do not share or allow possession to your access card or key.
  • Do not allow piggy-backing or tailgating through access controlled entries. An example of this is holding the door open for others to enter after an access card has been swiped. Such actions are prohibited. Each employee or contractor should badge into the building without assistance.
  • If you witness suspicious persons or situations, immediately contact security to file a report.
  • If you, or anyone assisting you, have not been issued a permanent badge, a temporary ID badge is required. Temporary identity badges can be obtained at the security desk.
  • Visitors always need to report to the appropriate security desk.

The following are examples of behaviors that could be considered suspicious:

  • Individuals loitering and attempting to enter through inappropriate door ways.
  • An unfamiliar person going from room to room or office to office;
  • A person standing in a hallway for a long period of time;
  • A person waiting outside of the building near the time that the building will be opening or closing.

To help make the office a safe environment employees should:

  • Ensure everyone has their proper ID badge displayed.
  • Security and your immediate supervisor should be notified in the event of individuals without proper identification.
  • Do not allow piggy backing or tailgating. Each employee or contractor should have an appropriate badge displayed and uses it to gain building access without assistance.
  • Properly register all visitors to your office area.
  • Secure all valuables and do not leave them visible if you are not at your work area.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the security officer so that the matter may be looked into.
  • Be aware and practice your emergency action and evacuation drills.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially in parking areas.
